MS. HANSEN

I am very excited to be starting this school year here at Frederiksen Elementary. This will be my fifth year teaching fifth grade here at Fred. I moved to Frederiksen from Kolb Elementary in East Dublin. I taught fourth grade at Kolb for one year. Prior to teaching at Kolb,  I was teaching in the Roseland School District in Sonoma County, California. I started teaching at Roseland Elementary in 2008. I was hired as a long term substitute to take over for my mentor teacher when she went out on maternity leave in October of that year. In May 2009, I was hired on full time to teach fifth grade. This was an exciting opportunity because I was able to take nine of my fourth grade students with me up to fifth grade. I taught fifth grade at Roseland for four years where I had many invaluable experiences that helped me to grow as an educator as well as a person.

My path to becoming a teacher was paved at Sonoma State University where I graduated summa cum laude and with distinction in 2007. After graduating with my BA in American Multicultural Studies, I enrolled in Sonoma State's teaching program. I was awarded my credential in 2008 and begin working full time shortly after finishing my coursework.

I love teaching, and I will do all I can to make sure my students are included, appreciated, challenged, and respected in every aspect of school. We will work hard, and play just as hard. I believe that, as a team, there is very little we can't do. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to help your children grow. We are going to have a great year!

HOMEWORK INFORMATION

Homework Folders

The homework folder is my communication tool between home and school.  Students should also use these folders to transport homework. These folders will be sent home everyday and should be returned the following day.

Homework Policy

Homework will be sent home on a daily basis.  Students copy the homework into their Planners every day. Homework will have five main parts: math pages, reading, reading response, spelling and sometimes Social Studies or Science.  Per district policy, fifth graders should have an average of 50 minutes (with a maximum of 80 minutes including reading) of homework per night, Monday-Friday.  Activities that are sent home should be at your child’s independent level.  If your child is taking longer than the 80 minutes, please contact me and we will work something out to help alleviate the homework load.

Math Pages – Students will be given daily math pages to reinforce what they are learning in class.  Please have your child learn their multiplication and division math facts to 12 by the end of December.  Occasionally I may assign electronic homework practice on IXL when it is up and running.

Reading – Students are expected to read for 30 minutes every night.  Students will be expected to write a 5 sentence summary nightly on the Reading Rewards website. Four of these sentences are a simple summary of what they read the night before. The last sentence should be a connection of feeling they had while reading this part of their book.  I suggest you check their reading log sentences nightly to ensure that they are completing the task to the best of their ability.

Spelling –  There will not be any official nightly spelling homework. However, we will be using the website Quizlet to help study for the weekly spelling and vocab tests. The use of Quizlet should be nightly so the students are well prepared to pass the tests on Fridays. Our tests are fill in the blank sentences so students must know the meaning of the words in addition to its correct spelling.

Social Studies/Science-  Your child may have some nightly homework from these classes.  Sometimes it will be to complete workbook pages, or it may be to take notes.

In addition to the regular homework, students will occasionally bring home unfinished classroom work or work that needs to be finished or corrected. This is my way of notifying you that your child may need some extra help in this area.

All homework must be done in the child’s handwriting, in pencil.

HOMEWORK IS DUE EVERY DAY.  Students are to return their homework in their Homework Folders every day. Please ensure your child does his/her homework daily.  It is very important that children develop daily homework routines.  Any student who does not complete their homework will work on it during recess.  If a child consistently has trouble turning in their homework I will contact the parents to inform them of this concern.

Attendance

School begins promptly at 8:25 a.m..  Students should go directly to the playground or stand in our class line before school no earlier than 8:10 a.m.  Once the 8:23 a.m. warning bell rings, students should walk to their classroom and wait for me to open the door.  I will close the classroom door when the last child enters.  If your child arrives after the door is closed, then they are considered tardy and must report the office for a late slip.  It is important for your child to be in school, on time, every day.  Much of what goes on in class cannot easily be replicated at home.  It is understandable that illness and emergencies come up, so if your child is sick or has to miss school, I will send home whatever work can be completed at home upon his/her return.  Please send the work back to me when it is complete.  Please try to schedule all your vacations with DUSD's holiday schedule.  Any independent study requests will have to be approved by the principal.

Field Trips

  •  Field trips are fun and educational.  For the safety of our student, Dublin Unified has the following field trip policies:

    1. All students must turn in a signed permission slip.

    2. All volunteers must be cleared through the district.  You may turn in paperwork to the office.

    3. All drivers must have the proper insurance coverage and give a copy of the insurance policy which states coverage to the school in advance.  Clearance for chaperoning and driving must be completed at least one month  in advance.

    4. All students must have their own seat belt.  Students may not ride in the front seat.

â€¢ A non-cleared parent/guardian cannot show up at a field trip site and plan to join in on the trip.  Any parent/guardian leaving with their child must have cleared this with the teacher in advance.

â€¢ If you are driving/chaperoning for a field trip, you may only go to the destination and back.  There should be no stopping for lunch, snacks, gifts, etc.

  • Please do not purchase anything for the students while on the trip.

***NO SIBLINGS ARE ALLOWED ON FIELDS TRIPS FOR ANY REASON***

Soon you will receive a list of the many exciting trips we have planned for this school year.  Please keep in mind that due to restrictions placed upon us by the destinations, each trip is only allowed a limited number of parent chaperons.  In order to make it fair and to give each child’s family a chance to attend a field trip, all chaperon spots will be filled using a lottery system.  In the event that extra chaperon spots become available, interested parents will be notified, and those additional parents will be responsible for their own transportation and/or the associated costs.

Parent Communication

In an effort to save paper, the majority of my home/school communication will be done via e-mail.  If you do not have access to a computer please let me know.  The Office also sends out a monthly email blast that you must sign up for.  Not everyone signs up for these emails or reads them, so I may forward them to you once in a while as well.

Classroom Volunteers

Parents are welcome to volunteer in the classroom, but please know that you must have an approved clearance form on file in the office.  If you would like to volunteer (or go on a field trip) please obtain a volunteer form in the office and fill it out and return it to me as soon as possible.  Once your form has cleared (this could take a few weeks), I will contact you and we can schedule an appropriate time for you to come in.  While you may have been cleared in years past it is DUSD policy to require parents to get cleared every year.

Progress Reports/Report Cards

Official progress reports for students who are at risk of not meeting grade level standards are sent out three times throughout the year a few weeks before sending out report cards.  The progress report must be signed and returned, which will assure me that you are aware of your child’s progress.  Report cards will be sent home at the end of each trimester.  Report cards will be sent in an envelope that should be signed and returned.  First-trimester report card will be given at parent/teacher conferences in November.  Second-trimester report cards will go home in March, and third-trimester report cards will be sent home on the last day of school. Additionally, if there is an academic or behavior concern, I will send home a report immediately. DUSD's policy is that teachers may not send home publisher (Envisions, Houghton Mifflin, etc.) created tests.  After every test, the students will be informed of their scores. They will record their scores on googleclassroom. All math scores are also available on pearsonrealize.com

Conferences

Parents and teachers make up a team who must work together for the good of the children. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail at any time with comments, concerns, and questions that you may have throughout the school year.  Formal conferences will be held in September.  At this time parents will have a chance to meet with me individually to discuss their child's progress.  If you were unable to sign up for conferences during Back to School Night, I will be sending home a conference time with your child. If this time is unable to work for you, feel free to email me and we can try to schedule a better time.

Behavior

 Frederiksen follows three school-wide rules:

    1. We will be respectful

    2. We will be responsible

    3. We will be safe

Students developed and signed a social contract specifying how they want to be treated by each other.

We also have a school-wide behavior matrix which spells out specific rules to which students must abide.  The matrix is also found in each classroom and throughout the campus.

These rules will be enforced in all areas of the campus and are consistent in each classroom from K-5.  The class/school rules are clearly posted on the wall for everyone to see and often revisited in class.  We expect the children to follow the rules.  Positive Behavior is encouraged and frequently rewarded throughout the day.  Should a child need to practice a particular behavior (i.e. raising a hand and not blurting out, working independently without talking, etc.), your child will stay in for Study Hall.  If I have recess yard duty that week students will spend recess time at the lunch tables.  If a behavior notice goes home, please review the rules with your child, sign the note, and send it back to me the next day.

Snack Recess

Please try to send healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, crackers & cheese, sandwiches, yogurt, bagels, rice cakes, etc. for our 10:30 recess.  Please make sure that your child knows what they should eat at snack time.  This will eliminate full lunches being eaten at snack time.

Lunch Money

Lunches may be purchased in advance by sending a check to the office to be applied to your child’s lunch account.  Please place the check in an envelope with your child’s name, teacher’s name, room number, and amount on it.  There is a box in the front office to drop off these payments.  (Please DO NOT send money to school with your child as it is easily lost and creates longer waiting times in the lunch line.)  You may also go online to the district webpage and add money to your child’s account.  I recommend putting a small amount of money on your child’s lunch account in the event that they happen to forget their lunch.  The lunch menu is always available online on the school districts homepage.  You may then either view the menu on your computer or print it out.  In an effort to save paper, the school will no longer be sending home printed menus each month.

Bathroom and Water Policies

Students should be responsible and use the restroom before school and during their breaks.  No student will be allowed to use the restroom fifteen minutes before or after the bell rings.  Leaving the classroom is disruptive and causes learning minutes to be lost.  If your child has a medical issue please let me know.  I will allow always allow students to relieve themselves in an emergency situation.

Students are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle from home. We have a sink in the classroom, and I will ask the students to fill their water bottles before school and during recess. If they need additional water they are reminded to fill their bottles during lunch using the drinking fountains.

Emergency Forms

If your child is going to be picked up after school by someone other than yourself (parents/guardian), their name(s) must be on your child’s emergency card.  Please make sure that you check your child’s emergency card in the office should you need to add any additional names of people authorized to pick up your child.

Miscellaneous Notes:

1.  Frederiksen Spirit Wear may be purchased online through Fred.'s website.  Students usually wear Spirit Wear (or a red top) on Fridays.

2.  Please label all lunch boxes and articles of loose clothing.

I look forward to teaching your child.  Here's to a great fifth grade year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Hansen
